New Year, New Day!

Happy New Year!

Today is the 4th day of the new year and it’s time to say goodbye to one more year on the calendar of our lives. While some of us may be saying good riddance, thank goodness THAT is over.  Some of us may be wishing 2015 could go on forever, it was such a great year and we aren’t sure if we can top it!

Some of us may be fearful for what this new year may bring to us, we may have been thru so much in our lives, and while we are glad to see a hard year come to a close, we might be dreading what crap a new year could have in store for us.  Today is the 4th day, only 361 more to go, so instead of dreading what is to come, look forward to it.

The thing is, yes we may all measure our lives in years, but the truth is, life should be measured in days.  We think each year is a new beginning and we get so excited on day one, day two, three, four, about all the possibilities we are wishing and hoping for.  We make grand plans to change and improve this or that, we claim this is going to be our year and all is right in the world.

Then life slaps us with something within a few days of our fresh start.  An unexpected bill, a broken appliance, a sick child or loved one, lay offs, now all of the grand plans we had for a great year start to fade and we get caught up in the drama and start to count the days until this new year is over too!

For this reason we should all count our lives by the day not the year.  Each DAY is a new beginning, the possibilities are endless, why wait for a new year!?  Wake up every day with the same hope and optimism for the day ahead, as we did on January 1st for the new year.  If we wake up every day thinking today is going to be our best day ever, then it just might be.  Tomorrow and the day after too, but today for sure!

As with years we will have bad days.  The good news is, it’s only one day, tomorrow is our next new beginning.  When we have a bad day, we should spend our energy getting excited about tomorrow, after all every tomorrow is a new beginning and you don’t have to wait a year for it to start!

I challenge us all to write on our monthly calendars, Good for good days and Bad for Truly bad days, if it was just a day, then it will be labeled as good.  At the end of this year, count each good day and each bad day, which ever one is greater then that is how we will determine what kind of year we really had.  I am willing to bet we will have more good days than bad.

Bad seems to hold more real estate in our minds and souls to where it seems like a bad year, when in fact the good actually was more prevalent we just lost count of those good days.  Why we do this, I really don’t have the answer as I am just as guilty of it as anyone else, and frankly I am sick of having bad year after bad year, my perspective of bad has been skewed by my lack of counting the good days as much as I do the bad ones.

Before too many days pass, I am starting my calendar.  So far on day 4 out of 365, they have all been good, this is going to be my best year yet because I am going keep a count of all the good days and put my bad days into perspective.  They are just bad days, not years.

We aren’t guaranteed life in years only days, only today.

Here is to our Best Year Yet!  Welcome 2016!
