Walk a Mile

From the moment we are born our journey through this life starts. None of us have the same journey. If you think about that, it’s kind of amazing. There is not one human journey exactly the same as another. Just like every human’s DNA and appearances are different so are their journeys. Some journeys are full of joy, happiness, love, stability and peace, some are not. Sure, no one escapes this life without some disappointment’s setbacks and sadness, the journey of some of us has more of the good than the bad and vice versa. Sometimes the difficult journey is our fault, poor choices, mistakes, not being or striving to be a good human. But a lot of what humans go through is not their fault. Hurtful Things are done and said to them. And for what purpose!? Who know really, maybe to make ourselves feel more superior, maybe feel better about the shit storm we call life or just because we have so much hatred in our hearts for whatever reason that we need to spread some of it around!?

Humans tend to judge other humans without ever walking a mile in their shoes or even thinking about how those shoes must feel. Some of us have thought we would handle situations differently and get different outcomes so we assume everyone else should also be able to do it. The kicker is we THINK we know how we would handle a situation, we THINK we know how we could control an outcome if the situation were ours. We THINK we can do life better. No one, not you, not me, not anyone can ever in a million years understand everything about another human’s life and their journey through it. Since we were all created different, we can’t comprehend how someone else is truly feeling all the time, how hard they may be struggling just to survive. Sure, we can all empathize and maybe we have been in the same situation at some point. Maybe we came through our trial with flying colors but that doesn’t mean everyone can or will. It’s not that they don’t want to, sometimes people are just too broken. Sometimes their soul is tired and feels crushed under the weight of their journeys thus far.

When people constantly live with difficulties, unfortunate luck and bad breaks it pulls and robs little pieces of them until it gets to a point where they can become numb, it gets harder and harder to bounce back from being knocked down over and over again. Our job as good humans is to reserve our judgement, not believe we would be able to handle things so much better than someone else. Stop thinking we need tell people where their mistakes were made and how to correct them, especially if our opinions or advice is not asked for. Because my friends, we have NOT walked a mile in their shoes, we never will and never could. Things that some humans face might break us if we literally were going through what they are facing. Instead of sitting in judgement try sitting in encouragement, sit in grace, sit in love and maybe try lifting someone up with words of Hope instead of piling on and knocking them down. Try loving them through their troubles, try putting ourselves in their shoes. Not how we think we would handle it or what we think we would do after a quick thought of their situation but really sit with it and think how it must truly feel for whatever difficulty someone may be going through, that could be sad, unfair or utterly devestating.

It would be nice if we could mitigate all suffering amongst our fellow humans, but we can’t. What we can do is smile when we see a frown to brighten a day. Speak to someone we see that is upset. Give a hug to a stranger that we see crying. Be what may be, they’re only blessing that day. Speak words of hope and encouragement over someone. Being a blessing in small simple ways can and does make a huge difference and impact. It can change the course of someone’s day, week or life, it can give them hope knowing someone cares. Having Hope is what keeps us moving forward. We may not always see the impact that brief second of kindness might have but we all know that being unkind has an impact that can last a lifetime. What makes us think being kind doesn’t have the same impact but in reverse, for the better of someone’s life or journey. I challenge everyone to be kind. We all get to choose if we are unkind or kind to others. Before we judge, before we think poorly of someone, let’s try and walk a mile in someone else’s shoes in our own minds and choose kindness towards them, it may change someone’s life, and it will definitely change yours!
